I actually really enjoyed the challenge of having music inspire the sketches. At first, I'd assumed that it might be "cliche" types of music being used, like classical vs. rap or etc. I was pleasantly surprised by the songs chosen and felt as if they were all good choices. My favourite pieces from this activity were from the second and third song. I feel the second song piece ("gravity") is a good, quick attempt at cursive, although I feel that I messed up on the thickness of some of the letters near the end (specifically the 'Y' and the 'T') but overall I like how it turned out. The other two pieces are from the third song, and are kind of attempts at doing cursive-esque printing. I think that makes it feel a little fancier, and a little more fragile with the thin little lines.
I definitely think that using the little train tracks (and tiny trains!) looks like something that could be straight out of a children's book, especially with the green grass background that we chose to do. Nevertheless, using these pieces was a challenge, particularly for letters that had only partially curved pieces (B, R, G, etc.). Our group used the little train pieces to join together parts of the letters as a 'mini piece' (ex. C and U), and in enough letters so that it looks like a coherent, singular alphabet. We felt that using them in every single letter would seem awkward because they wouldn't be able to be used in the same way as they were in the letters that needed them as joints; they would just be decorative in some way. Overall, I feel like this was a fun exercise and challenge. (Also, we may have done the J and Z backwards at first. I can't even remember the alphabet it seems.) ![]()
The first sketch image was drawn specifically for this blog post, and then the other two were just sketches I did during the summer (after I finally realized I was taking Graphic again and hadn't had any hand drawing practice..). I feel like I've gotten a little better at my cursive writing since last year, something I'm pretty proud of. I know that I should still strive to get better with the opportunity of taking Graphic Design for second time, and I hope to. The inspiration for the first sketch is from the title of one of my favourite books, American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Something I plan to reread soon. The other two are quotes from the video game Portal 2. During the summer I also did a larger, inked version of those two sketches and might do a colour version on my computer for practice sometime. Overall, I find sketches to be pretty relaxing when you have a lil' inspiration to fuel you, and sometimes you end up with a neat design.
